beginning and now this big arrest. >> reporter: keith and denise, this has very much been an open wound and very tragic, very tragic set of circumstances, tragic mystery for this entire town. this week marks three months, but very quietly just before 3:00, and we were the only cameras here, d.j. creato got out of an unmarked detective's car, he was walked by detectives right here into the haddon township police department to be processed. we asked him why he did it, but he said not one word. he is the same father who dialled 911 and was inconsolable, according to police, the morning his son vanished and was found dead in october. 22 year old d.j. creato is said to have murdered his 3-year-old son brendan, but how and why he did it, they didn't say. wearing a jacket, hood, and handcuffs, five detectives led creato into police headquarters to be processed for a crime that left this community in shock. brendan creato's lifeless body

was left by the cooper river, according to police, on the morning of october 13th, the same morning d.j. dialled 911 to say his son had wandered away alone. detectives with the camden county prosecutor's office have been digging into the case ever since. a grand jury indicted creato this morning, the same grand jury that his sister, the little boy's aunt sarah, answered to in november about a college documentary that she made featuring brendan as a little boy who disappeared and was later found dead. clearly, we still don't know why or how little brendan was killed, after three months of this case essentially being unsolved, police processed creato in just under an hour behind these doors. he's already left to be transported to jail. creato will be arraigned and have his first chance to speak before the judge tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 in the camden county justice complex. we did reach out to his attorney based in philadelphia this afternoon by phone, and e-mail, but we have yet to hear back.

i'm told his bail will be set at a million dollars. live in haddon township, i'm cydney long, nbc 10 news. >> thank you. nbc 10 has team coverage from haddon township. deanna durante joins us now live at a memorial for the young boy. what have you seen there today, deanna? >> reporter: well, many people have been stopping by the neighborhood where the young boy's grandparents live. it's still decorated with blue ribbons, ribbons the neighbors tell us were put up when young brendan went missing, not far from the memorial maintained by people who live here, people have been leaving hinges for the last three months. we talked to people in the neighborhood of both creato's father and his grandparents, they said although they were waiting for news, this was news that they did not want to hear. some say they are not surprised by who has been arrested. >> seems the neighborhood was helping look for him. >> of course. i can't believe it was him either. everyone was searching and

helping. >> i'm not surprised, that's just a feeling. >> people assumed it had to be a person because it didn't seem like a 3 year old would just end up at cooper by themselves. that was unlikely. so i don't really know what to think. >> reporter: now also on social media people are reacting saying that they are not surprised by this, leaving their comments on various sites dedicated to the family, fundraising pages, facebook, twitter, other social media sites are blowing up this afternoon at news of this arrest. i did reach out to an attorney representing family members in this case, he told me that he and other legal experts are awaiting more information from the prosecutor's office like the cause of death in this case and that they were hoping to have that information some time this evening. reporting live in camden county, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. >> we are still working to uncover new details on this arrest. count on nbc 10 to bring you the latest developments on air as soon as they happen.

police say the owner of a store opened fire on three thieves trying to hold up his business this morning. officers say it killed one of the men, another man is in custody, the third, though, still out there. police believe that man may be wounded. also tonight, nbc 10 has uncovered new details about the gunman accused of ambushing a philadelphia police officer inside his patrol car. >> lauren mayk is live at police headquarters. lauren, what have you learned? >> reporter: good evening, keith. well, we found that the man accused in this shooting, he is a former local high school football player and the man he is accused of shooting, officer jesse hartnett, he is still in the hospital tonight in critical but stable condition. >> really got to keep him in your prayers. >> reporter: police commissioner is talking about officer jesse hartne hartnett, the police officer shot three times in an ambush last week, not wanting anyone to think this shooting didn't do serious dangerous damage. we're learning more about the man police say is behind it,

30-year-old edward archer. he went to high school at penn wood, played football there. he claims he shot hartnett in the name of islam, but their investigation isn't over. >> the biggest thing is trying to see where this investigation will lead us to ensure that no more officers are in jeopardy. >> reporter: a tipster telling police to be careful, that others are out there, that the mosque down the street, police presence is visible. >> it's bogus, they are trying to say it's some terrorist group. i don't know what they are talking about. >> reporter: the imam here saying the actions of one does not represent other muslims. in yeadon, where officers spent hours on friday, a woman told us today she has no comment on the advice of an attorney. officer hart they are remains in the hospital, a long recovery ahead. >> made us proud, men and women who wear the uniform across the country proud. he's got a long way to go and i

a makeshift memorial sits at the corner where david austin was gunned down friday. investigators say austin was sitting in his car when he was shot. chester's mayor says the victim was married and had ten children. 22-year-old amir saunders is in custody for at least two carjacking incidents in bensa m bensalem, bucks county. he's being held on bail. police say saunders tried to carjack a woman at a wawa on route 1 at 6:00 last night. as the woman got into her car, police say saunders grabbed the car door and tried to pull her out. she blew her car horn and witnesses came to help. police believe saunders carjacked a man at the same place last month. philadelphia's recently retired police commissioner is already back to fighting crime in our area. charles ramsey just retired from the philadelphia police department, but today only nbc 10 was there as he signed on to help the city of wilmington with

its crime problem. he says he'll look at where crime is happening in the city and find ways the police department can more effectively fight and prevent it. >> we want to really take a deeper dive into who's responsible in committing some of the crimes here in wilmington, particularly the violent crime. if i can be of some assistance to make the streets a little bit safer, then i'm more than willing to do it. >> wilmington will pay ramsey and support staff about $16,000 a month for the next seven months. the mayor says that money will come out of the police department's budget. and here's a look at ramsey's history. he was born in chicago in 1950 and joined the city's police force as a cadet in 1968. ramsey moved up the ranks of the department over the course of three decades. in 1998 he became washington, d.c.,'s police chief and finally in 2008 he came to philadelphia and took on the role of police commissioner. this just in, the chairman

of montgomery county commissioner says he's running for state attorney general. josh shapiro says he'll make a formal announcement tomorrow, joining a crowded field vying to proceed kathleen kane in the november election. kane says she will seek a second term, despite facing a criminal trial. governor chris christie and new jersey lawmakers have reached an agreement on a measure to bring a casino to north jersey, requiring a minimum $1 billion investment by anyone who wants to open the casino. the assembly would still have to give the okay by august and if they do, people in new jersey would vote on the casino in november. the new legislative session begins tomorrow. ♪ ♪ ground control to major tom >> the loss of david bowie has the music world in mourning today. coming up next on nbc 10 news at 5:00, we take a look at bowie's connection to philadelphia and why he chose to record one of his albums here.

♪ ♪ look up here, i'm in heaven >> about 48 hours after releasing this music video, david bowie passed away following a battle with cancer. he had just turned 69 on friday, the same day he released his latest album and this video. the song is called "lazareth" and some are interpreting it as bowie's farewell to the world. the video shows a frail bowie lying in bed. the song begins with the line "look up here, i'm in heaven." and flowers are piling up at a well known portrait of bowie at a street in london. he was born in this neighborhood back in 1947. bowie also had strong connections to our area. two of his most famous albums were recorded here. >> yeah, right here. >> reporter: a tribute to rocker

david bowie outside the old sigma sound studios in center city, where the singer recorded some of his young americans album back in the mid '70s. long-time wmmr deejay agrees with those who believe bowie came to philly to capture the music magic in the air back then known as the philly sound. >> studio was known to have a very rich tone to it, so a lot of artists recorded there, but to our great surprise and pleasure, he was one of them. ♪ ground control to major tom >> reporter: bowie also recorded his first live album at the tower theater in upper darby, reminiscing about his long connection to our town. >> i have major performances that kind of debuted in philadelphia, so it is a recurrent city in my life. >> he was an outcast, i felt like an outcast as a young kid. >> reporter: bowie was more than a favorite musician. >> he was sort of somebody to

look to who was like you if you were not like everybody else. >> someone like david bowie actually became a role model for success in an unconventional form. his loss is really hitting a lot of people very hard. they are getting this double whammy, we didn't know he was sick. now not only is he sick, released a brand new album, birthday was a few days ago, and now he's gone. ♪ >> and today even the vatican honored bowie by tweeting the opening lyrics to "space odyssey." "ground control to major tom, may god be with you." from our delaware bureau, openly carrying guns in newark could become a thing of the past. the ban carries over to all city government buildings and also nonmunicipal buildings. government officials are discussing public business, police are excluded from that

ban. with a permit, people can still carry concealed firearms. a new jersey panel says the state should continue using the controversial parcc exam. the national common core curriculum standards were reviewed, the governor claims the standards aren't working. the panel's report discusses the concern over too much time spent on standardized testing, but it recommends using the parcc test as a requirement for students to graduate starting in 2021. well, we haven't needed it just yet. >> that's not that bad of a thing, but when the snow actually does fall, you can watch penndot's plow trucks at work. the pilot program is available at 511pa.com. governor tom wolf says the initiative will maximize the efficiency of the agency's fleet. across the state penndot has more than 2,200 trucks and rents another 270. now, there is the possibility of

snow this week, but sheena, not enough to plow, right? >> you know, not really, but we will see some pretty good snow showers, i think, for a very short period of time. keep in mind the wind is going to help to also bring this in, so along with that wind in place, they are not going to be long lasting, but will have some tomorrow for part of the area. otherwise we started the week with an arctic blast, still cold and windy outside right now and the first snowflakes will be tomorrow and we're saying snowflakes, because it's not a snowstorm, but we will have some snow showers moving through, mostly in the afternoon. i'll show you the timing in a second. otherwise wednesday will be colder than today and windy again, so quite a difference from yesterday. take a look at yesterday, sunday we hit 65 degrees, record high yesterday. today we've gotten into the mid 30s. that's a good 30-degree drop in temperatures. big shock to the system tomorrow, only around low 40s, so not as cold as today, but look at wednesday, down into the upper 20s for a high temperature.

right now we're at 18 degrees in the poconos. actual temperature 27 in pottstown, 33 in philadelphia, 33 millville, 35 in dover. 33 in atlantic city. remember it's still windy outside, so when you walk outside and the wind hits you, this is what it actually feels like. in the poconos, feels like 4 degrees. feels like the mid 20s in philadelphia and northeast philly. safe to say pretty much everybody feels about ten degrees colder than the actual temperature at the moment. tonight the winds start to die down and we are nice and dry on satellite and radar, just some clouds around. there you see snow showers off to our west, not much, but this system is going to organize a bit more by tomorrow and then we'll see some snow showers moving in. here's what it looks like on future weather. tonight we stay cold and dry, temperatures dropping for most of the area into about the mid 20s. dry for the morning, but this is 1:00 p.m. tomorrow. here you see snow showers north and west of philadelphia. the poconos will be very happy about this considering all the

rain we had this weekend. rest of the area not too bad, just dry, not as cold, but look what happens in the afternoon, another wave of snow showers moving in with temperatures above freezing so we don't expect much of this to be sticking, but then some more snow showers could be moving in mostly areas north and west where the temperatures could be dropping below freezing. again as you see, not a snowstorm, just snow showers. then we go into wednesday and we are colder and windy. temperatures only in the upper 20s. so here's a look at future snowfall, this shows how little we expect. areas north and west could be seeing the most, which could be less than an inch, then we could see some of the quick snow showers through the rest of the area. so nothing that's going to be a big deal, but something to keep a watch out for tomorrow afternoon. low temperatures tonight, 14 allentown and even in the poconos in the lower teens, pottstown 21 degrees, philadelphia 24 overnight, 23 for millville, and temperatures tomorrow afternoon still on the cold side, but not as cold.

then we have the afternoon snow showers moving in, highs anywhere from 39 to 43 degrees. big drop as we go into wednesday, though, from the low 40s tomorrow, upper 20s wednesday and dry, upper 30s into thursday. we do start to warm up more for the weekend, so that's going to be our next rain chance in the forecast, but either way the poconos will be able to make snow all week. >> thanks, sheena. a delaware district says their schools need an upgrade, but need the public's help to pay for it. how should it could end up costing taxpayers. plus, a senior living community welcomes a new resident. how this furry friend will help them in more ways than one.

this is nbc 10 news. >> hello. >> kisses from their newest roommate. look at that loving. meet homer the therapy dog. today he's moved into a retirement community in northeast philadelphia. the two and a half year old yellow lab will not only visit the residents there, but also help out with speech, physical, and occupational therapy. members of the spca were recognized today for enforcing a new law associated with animal fighting. they were presented with a 2015 humane law enforcement award

after charging two chester county residents with possession of animal fighting paraphernalia. take a closer look at that law now. it makes it illegal to possess any physical evidence associated with animal fighting, including facilities or drugs used for animal fighting or to train animals to fight. violators face a year in jail and $2,500 fine. to this now, a philadelphia officer ambushed in his own cruiser. cruiser. used a stolen gun. coming up next, the nbc 10 investigators try to figure out where that gun has been and if it was used in other crimes. plus, police say this pastor traveled all over the country as he committed crimes against a teenaged girl. his latest stop right here in our area. that's next on nbc 10 news at 5:00.

this is nbc 10 breaking news. >> we continue to follow breaking news out of camden county tonight. the father of a 3-year-old boy found dead in haddon township is now in police custody. d.j. creato is charged with killing his son brendan, who disappeared back in october. creato told police his son wandered off alone. the child's body was found a few hours later and investigators are now saying how the boy was killed. >> the nbc 10 investigators are

tracking the stolen gun used to shoot a philadelphia police officer. the gunman caught on surveillance camera firing the gun at officer jesse hart they are. police later admitted the weapon was stolen from one of their officers. >> and that happened more than two years ago, so how did the gun end up in the hands of edward archer and was it used in another crime? harry hairston working to track down those answers. harry, what have you learned? >> keith, denise, we've been searching all day for data on officers shot with the stolen police weapon. very little information is available, but there's plenty of information about guns lost or stolen right here in pennsylvania. an attack on a police officer is not necessarily rare, but a cop taking fire from a stolen police weapon is a different story. >> i don't think it's common, but police officers are citizens, as well, and sometimes things happen. >> reporter: as we first reported, the officer was disciplined after he reported his weapon stolen from his home

in october of 2013. the nbc 10 investigators found in january of 2013 the atf released a most recent report on the number of stolen and lost guns nationwide. the report shows in pa alone, 6,258 guns for stolen. >> we have an expression at atf to our investigators, follow the guns. >> just last month i sat down with the special agent in charge of the atf philadelphia field office. he told me each time a stolen gun is recovered, it's entered into a database to determine if it's been used in other crimes. >> we're going at a the achilles heel of the criminal, being able to match various crime scenes by the shell casings left at a scene. >> reporter: he also said shell casings are entered into a computerized system. once a gun is recovered from a crime scene, investigators fire a test shot and then enter that casing to see if it matches. >> every gun has a story.

what we do with our tracing efforts is follow the life of the gun and how it wound up at a particular crime scene or how it ends up in the hands of a criminal. >> a source close to the investigation into last week's shooting tells us so far it does not appear the stolen gun was used in any other crime, but investigators are still working on tracing the history of that weapon. for the investigators, harry hairston, nbc 10 news. and now to your first alert weather. colder temperatures across the region and the wind made it feel even colder. but no jackets required for these dogs in wilmington's rockford park. they let their own winter coats do the trick. >> let's talk to sheena parveen. sheena, with the temperature drop, we'll need our jackets, right? >> yes, we'll need our jackets through tonight because it is going to be much colder. the wind is going to diminish,

so it is going to be dropping into the teens north and west. look at the wind, though, still up near ten to 15 miles an hour for part of the area, so this is what it's making the temperatures feel like. actual temperature is about ten degrees warmer than where we're at right now, but the feels like, 18 in allentown and pottstown, feels like four degrees in the poconos, where they are currently making snow again. 24 is what it feels like in philadelphia, 27 in dover, feels like 24 in mount holly. we are watching snow showers to our west around chicago. this weather system will get more organized tomorrow, then it will bring us some snow showers, but it's not going to be a snowstorm, we just expect snow showers to move through mostly in the afternoon. so take a look at future weather. tonight we stay dry, the morning commute tomorrow stays dry, then you see the snow showers getting closer tomorrow afternoon and evening, so we finally have our first snowflakes in the forecast aside from that, much colder again as we go into wednesday.

definitely feeling like winter this week. coming up, closer look at the timing of this and what to expect through the rest of your week. that's straight ahead. >> sheena, thank you. right now at 5:00, though, police in chester county are looking for a church pastor who they say seduced a teen girl all across the country, then raped her at his house. jacob malone is wanted for rape, institutional sexual assault, and other offenses. she met malone when she was 12 years old at a church in mesa, arizona, when he worked there as a pastor. in 2014 malone began inappropriate conduct with a then-17-year-old girl while he served as a pastor in minnesota. shortly after malone moved to chester county for another pastor job and invited the teenaged girl to live with him. the teen told police malone began sexually assaulting her while she was living in his house. a philadelphia police officer calls for backup after seeing a man riding a bike wearing a ski mask. only nbc 10 cameras were there

as officers from several districts showed up and caught the man. happened in west philadelphia behind a rite aid at 47th and chestnut streets. on the ground police found the man's ski mask, a gun, and bullets. investigators are trying to figure out what started a strip mall fire in bucks county early this morning in the kitchen of the hong kong buffet. it also damaged a david's bridal store next door. today david's told nbc 10 it's assessing the damage and notifying customers. a newcastle county school district needs money. the district is now proposing a tax hike. the school district is holding a series of meetings this week to talk about that proposal. voters will head to the polls in march to decide on the referendum. the increase will cost residents about $240 more a year. the money would go towards major renovations at several district

[ gunfire ] >> we have new video which first aired on a mexican television network which shows the police raid at joaquin el chapo guzman's hideout. police say he was hiding in the house but managed to get away during a shootout with the mexican navy. he was later captured on a highway. with el chapo in custody, extradition proceedings are now under way and mexican officials plan to send him to the u.s. to face justice for drug trafficking charges. mexican officials are now focusing on a secret meeting between the drug kingpin and

that's subject to be thrown out as nominee. >> reporter: he's hammering hillary clinton's private e-mail server. >> please, fbi, please, go after hillary. i want to run against bernie! >> reporter: three weeks before iowa with the top spot still up for grabs. the next republican debate this thursday shifts the focus to another early battleground state, south carolina. brian mooar, nbc news washington. >> a reminder tomorrow is president obama's final state of the union. nbc news will have live coverage starting at 9:00 here on nbc 10. the u.s. coast guard came to the rescue of two men stranded off a south jersey coast. their sailboat broke down in a marshy area just after 8:00 last night. take a look at this newly released rescue video from the coast guard. the crew hoisted the two men into a helicopter and flew them to safety. no one was hurt.

now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, it's cold outside today. we've been like that all day today. the cold air moved in and that came after a record high temperatures yesterday. here's a live look at blue mountain ski resort. a lot of rain this weekend up in the poconos, but they have been able to make the snow again. there you see the snowboarders taking advantage of it. first arctic blast was today. tomorrow we're going to see the first snowflakes with snow showers moving through and colder into wednesday, that will be our second arctic blast. it is going to be colder than today was as we go into wednesday. right now in philadelphia, 33 degrees, but the wind is still making it feel around ten degrees colder, so it feels like 24 degrees right now. most of the area is feeling ten degrees colder, actual temps in the poconos 18 degrees, upper 20s for the lehigh valley, 30 in glassboro, 32 millville and 35 degrees right now in dover.

tomorrow won't be as cold, but then we have snow showers moving through. temperatures above freezing at the time they move through, not allowing much to stick, but later in the evening we could be seeing some of that sticking. right now we are dry, the snow we're watching is back to the west, not very organized, but tomorrow more organized and that's when some snow showers will blow in. we're not looking at a snowstorm, just looking at passing snow showers. here's future weather, tonight, though, we stay dry, temperatures dropping into the mid 20s for most of the area, teens north and west by tomorrow morning, though, then we'll see those snow showers. this is closer to lunchtime tomorrow, so early afternoon. our first chance could be up near the poconos and the lehigh valley, snow showers falling there, poconos are going to love that with the real snow moving in. by 6:00 p.m. you see more scattered snow showers through delaware, but notice temperatures are still above freezing by that time. then we'll see possibly more move through by 8:00, closer

into new jersey, so at this time some temperatures north and west could be dropping at or below freezing, which is when we could see that sticking, but we don't expect much. then we go into wednesday and get colder with temperatures only reaching the upper 20s. here's how little snow we expect with those snow showers. the poconos will be expecting the most, maybe close to an inch, elsewhere we are looking at not much at all, so that's why we don't expect this to be a big deal, just be careful as you're driving home in the evening if you run into any of those snow showers. tonight temperatures dropping to the teens north and west, 14 for the low in allentown, 21 pottstown, mid 20s philadelphia. new jersey suburbs into the teens, delaware in the mid 20s tonight. tomorrow afternoon not as cold, temperatures upper 30s to low to mid 40s, but we'll see the afternoon snow showers moving through. again, the morning commute looks fine, but amp and evening is when we expect the snow showers. could lower visibility for a time, but also going to be windy, so they are not going to be lasting long.

the figures are scary, about one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in this country. >> doctors have been divided on the appropriate age to start screening for the disease. today new recommendations were released on mammograms, and as erica edwards reports, they are causing quite a controversy. >> reporter: when it comes to screening women at average risk for breast cancer, earlier may not be better according to the latest guidelines. the u.s. preventive services task force finds mammograms offer the greatest benefit for women starting at age 50, with screening every other year. >> we found that the best benefits, the best benefits come from starting between the ages of 50 to 74. >> reporter: the task force says mammograms may be beneficial for women in their 40s, but that decision should be made by a woman and her doctor after discussing her personal risks. cost should not be a barrier, because federal law mandates health insurers cover mammograms for women starting at age 40.

the issue is that women in their early 40s are at lower risk for the disease, but at higher risk for false positives for mammograms. >> i think it's important to realize, though, that a lot of the false positives in the early 40s result because that is a woman's first mammogram and we have no prior mammograms for comparison. >> reporter: many breast imaging experts insist the potential for life saving screening outweighs the risk of false positives. >> i became a position to save lives, not allow them to be lost. >> reporter: breast cancer is diagnosed in about 200,000 women in the u.s. every year, killing 40,000. erica edwards, staigs nbc news. >> do not apply to those with a strong family history of factors, those women need to be screened earlier than others. nbc 10 news at 6:00 is next, here's jim rosenfield and jacqueline london. >> coming up next at 6:00, we're following breaking news. >> tonight we have team coverage

nbc 10 breaking news. >> right now at 6:00, this breaking news, a father arrested for murder months after the death of his 3-year-old son in camden county. good evening everyone, i'm jim rosenfield. >> and i'm jacqueline london. brendan creato's body was found several blocks from his home back in october. tonight we still don't know the possible motive or how the little boy died. what we do know is the boy's father, d.j. creato, faces first-degree murder charges. >> tonight we have team coverage in haddon township. cydney long broke this story as police brought the father to the police department and deanna durante has neighborhood reaction tonight, but we begin with cydney. >> reporter: jim and jackie, this case as you know has been heart breaking for this entire community and even with today's arrest of the father, the indictment the attorneys tell me they are not getting any answers as to how and why brendan died, so the indictment they say does not say very much at all. creato's attorney has confirmed

to us through another counselor that he will vigorously defend his client, who was walked through these doors just a couple hours ago. still numerous questions as to how little brendan died and why. only nbc 10 cameras were there as 22-year-old d.j. creato is led by detectives inside the haddon township police department. he had nothing to say for himself when we asked. it's been three months since his little boy brendan was discovered dead by the cooper river and now prosecutors say this young father is to blame. it was d.j. creato's voice we heard the very day his son disappeared calmly dialing 911 to report what happened. >> didn't hear anything or see anything, nothing like that? >> no. i just woke up and he wasn't here. i don't know if he wandered out or what happened, i don't know where he is. >> reporter: in the days and weeks that followed, neighbors were reluctant to allow their children to trick or treat because there had been no arrest or cause of death on an
